NEW YORK: In a stunning comeback, American teenager Coco Gauff secured her inaugural Grand Slam title at the US Open on Saturday, defeating Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus after an intense battle.
Coco Gauff delivered a determined performance on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, triumphing with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a thrilling contest lasting 2 hours and 6 minutes. This victory marks a fairytale transformation in her season’s trajectory.
Entering the final as the underdog against the hard-hitting second seed Sabalenka, who is set to claim the world number one ranking next week, the sixth-seeded Floridian demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Despite both players committing numerous errors in the match, watched by a record-breaking crowd of 28,143, it was Gauff who maintained her composure when it counted most, ultimately securing a well-deserved triumph.
This win signifies a remarkable turnaround for the 19-year-old, who had faced despair after a first-round exit at Wimbledon in July.
