TDAP’s FoodAg-2024 Exhibition Boosts Pakistan’s Agriculture Sector through Billion-Dollar Deals and International Partnerships

The 2nd International Food and Agriculture Exhibition, known as “FoodAg-2024” and hosted by TDAP, has proven to be a timely and significant event for the struggling agriculture sector in Pakistan. This exhibition has resulted in deals worth over $1.2 billion and has attracted around 800 buyers from 75 countries, including major international chains, buyers, and multinational corporations. With 330 exporters showcasing over 500 high-quality products, the event provided a platform for extensive business-to-business networking and presented Pakistani agricultural exporters with opportunities to expand their global reach.

The success of the exhibition is evident in the 36 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed with various countries such as China, Malaysia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Russia, Sri Lanka, France, and Gambia. These agreements covered a wide range of products including rice, processed foods, seafood, oranges, potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, mangoes, confectionery, meat, spices, cereals, and oil seeds. The potential impact of these partnerships extends beyond immediate deals, as they have the capability to lay the groundwork for long-term growth and market expansion.

While the achievements of FoodAg-2024 are commendable, they also underscore the missed opportunities in the past. The exhibition has highlighted the potential for revitalizing the agriculture sector, creating new business opportunities, attracting investments, and boosting domestic production. This success should motivate the commerce ministry to replicate such initiatives across other sectors to address the urgent need for non-debt foreign exchange.

The participation of China, a major foreign investor in Pakistan, in FoodAg-2024 further emphasizes the significance of the event. The substantial presence of Chinese buyers and the signing of export contracts worth $35 million demonstrate the potential for increasing Pakistan’s exports, particularly in seafood and halal meat markets. This should instill hope about the country’s economic prospects and the potential for growth. The engagement of countries beyond China indicates growing interest in Pakistani products, signaling a positive shift that can alleviate pressure on the current account and contribute to economic stability.

Looking ahead, it’s crucial for TDAP to extend its focus to other sectors with export potential, as swift action is essential. The effectiveness of the FoodAg initiative sets a precedent for future endeavors, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures to secure Pakistan’s economic resilience. This should underline the importance of immediate action and the potential impact of such measures.
