The Importance of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, 24-31 October & Pakistan

[post-views]

Editorial

The Global Media and Information Literacy Week (GMILW) is a UNESCO-driven initiative that aims to raise awareness and promote the development of media and information literacy (MIL) competencies among people of all ages, especially in the digital era. UNESCO defines MIL as “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act upon information and media across platforms, formats, and contexts”. MIL is essential for fostering critical thinking, civic participation, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion in a world where information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly pervasive and influential.

GMILW is aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which recognizes the role of ICTs and media in advancing education, gender equality, peace, justice, and human rights. GMILW also responds to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated the spread of misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and polarization online. GMILW allows stakeholders to collaborate and share best practices for combatting these threats and promoting reliable, credible, and diverse information sources.

GMILW is hosted by different countries annually, reflecting the diversity and specificity of MIL needs and initiatives worldwide. It encourages local actors to organize events and activities related to MIL in their communities or regions. These events include workshops, seminars, webinars, exhibitions, competitions, hackathons, and festivals. These events can raise awareness among different target groups (such as students, teachers, parents, journalists, librarians, policymakers, etc.) about the importance of MIL and how to develop and apply MIL skills in various contexts. These events can also showcase local achievements and innovations in MIL and foster networking and partnerships among local stakeholders.

Lastly, GMILW is an important initiative that aims to advance the global agenda on MIL and its contribution to sustainable development. GMILW also recognizes and celebrates the diversity and creativity of MIL actors and actions at different levels. GMILW is a platform for dialogue, exchange, learning, and collaboration among those interested or involved in MIL. Pakistan should also adopt the spirit of the day and work for the betterment of MIL standards in Pakistan.
