The significance of the constitution for a country like Pakistan is manifold. It establishes a federal government that can address common issues and interests of the whole country, such as defence, foreign affairs, trade, and currency. It distributes power between the national and regional governments, and prevents either level from becoming too dominant or oppressive. It also provides a framework for resolving conflicts and disputes among the different levels of government or among the citizens through peaceful and legal means.
Therefore, the constitution is a vital document that shapes a federal state’s political, social, and economic life. It reflects the values, principles, and aspirations of the people who live under it, and it guides them in their pursuit of justice, liberty, and prosperity. Accordingly, it is in the great interest of federal Pakistan to implement not only the spirit but also the canons of the constitution. Pakistan will only function when the rule of law and constitution is guaranteed.
