Since its inaugural Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has observed a substantial increase in the number of submissions received from diverse regions across the globe, demonstrating the widespread recognition and appreciation of the contributions of public service institutions.
The United Nations Public Service Awards, a beacon of global recognition, applauds the innovative achievements and impactful contributions of public service institutions. These institutions, through their effective enhancement of the efficiency and responsiveness of public administration at an international level, demonstrate the transformative power of public service. The annual competition of the UN Public Service Awards seeks to elevate the significance, professionalism, and visibility of public service institutions, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
The designation of Public Service Day on 23 June was officially established by the General Assembly on 20 December 2002, with the adoption of resolution 57/277. In 2003, the United Nations launched the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program to bolster appreciation for the Day and the crucial role of public service. This program underwent a comprehensive review in 2016 to align its objectives with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. This alignment reaffirmed the awards’ commitment to promoting sustainable and impactful public service initiatives on a global scale, as outlined in the 2030 Agenda.
The United Nations Public Service Forum, a global initiative, is dedicated to advancing capacity development in public governance. Organized annually by UN DESA in collaboration with a host country, the Forum provides a platform for capacity-development workshops, hosts the UN Public Service Awards ceremony, and facilitates a Ministerial Roundtable. These events are emblematic of the Forum’s unwavering dedication to nurturing excellence in public service and fostering international collaboration and best practices, creating a sense of global community in the pursuit of sustainable development.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of global objectives aimed at addressing various social, economic, and environmental challenges by the year 2030. Achieving these goals requires effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions, as emphasized by SDG 16 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
