The Peshawar High Court has issued an injunction on the Election Commission’s decision on the allotment of specific seats in the 2024 general elections.
The court issued the order on a plea of the Sunni Ittehad Council, which had taken the stand that it was not given a quota of specific seats.
A bench consisting of Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Shakeel Ahmed has issued a notice to the Election Commission and sought its response.
The court has ordered that members elected to certain seats should not take oath.
Qazi Anwar, the lawyer of the Sunni Unity Council, told the court that the Election Commission did not give a fair decision for the seats of the National and Provincial Assemblies. He said that the reserved seats of the Sunni Ittehad Council section cannot be divided constitutionally and legally.
He requested the court to prevent the members who have been elected to certain seats from taking oath.
Justice Shakeel Ahmed remarked that if the Sunni Ittehad Council did not list candidates for certain seats, then these seats could not be given to others.
The court has adjourned the hearing of the case till tomorrow.
