The recent incident that took place in Bahalwanagr has once again highlighted the growing distrust of the public towards law enforcement agencies in Pakistan. The incident involved a member of the army who was raided by the Police, which led to the military manhandling the Police and police stations in retaliation.
While this incident is undoubtedly a sad episode, what is more interesting is the people’s response to it. In a democratic society, the people are expected to stand by the Police, who are meant to protect them and uphold the law. However, in this case, the public has shown a lack of trust in the Police.
This growing distrust towards law enforcement agencies can be attributed to the fact that many institutions in Pakistan, including the Police, bureaucracy, and judiciary, have been accused of not working in the public’s interest but rather for their own interests and abusing the common public. This has led to an erosion of faith in these institutions, and the public is no longer willing to trust them blindly.
The incident in Bahalwanagr reminds all institutions that if they do not work for the public’s cause, the public will not endorse them. It is high time for these institutions to start working in the interest of the people they are meant to serve and restore the public’s trust in them. Furthermore, the public has shown great fury over the Police’s highhandedness regarding their home raids. It has been observed lately that the Police have abused power in dealing with the common public.
Lastly, it is crucial for states and societies to function according to the rule of law. The incident in Bahawalnagar highlights the need for all institutions to work together to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served. Only then can we hope to build a just and fair society based on trust and accountability?
