Editorial

As the US presidential election approaches, both the Democratic and Republican parties are courting the Muslim community, which is a small but significant voting bloc, especially in swing states.

A recent study focused on Muslim voters in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan revealed that the handling of the war in Gaza heavily influences their voting intentions. President Joe Biden’s approach to the conflict has led to a sharp decline in support among Muslim voters compared to the 2020 election.

The war in Gaza has become a unifying issue for Muslim voters, with many prioritizing it over other important issues such as healthcare and the economy. The majority of Muslim voters in the surveyed swing states are focused on the war in Gaza and reducing military aid to Israel.

The study also found that while some Muslim voters have shifted their support from Biden to Trump, many are considering third-party candidates or are still undecided. This indicates that there is an opportunity for candidates to gain the support of this crucial constituency.

Both the Democratic and Republican campaigns have been making efforts to reach out to Muslim and Arab American voters, recognizing the significance of their support in key swing states.

Despite facing increased incidents of bias and Islamophobia, the Muslim community remains steadfast in their solidarity with the people of Gaza, making it clear that candidates cannot afford to overlook their concerns. Not only in the USA but in other countries, Muslim voters have considered the Israel-Plestine war. This increasing trend in the Western countries is creating political pressure on the local politics to correct the measures in the conflict. Most of the Muslim communities are not happy with their state governments regarding the human rights violations in the war. Therefore, they are expressing their concerns through ballots to the political parties to remain just in the conflict, and US elections are no exception.
