In the eastern Bangladeshi city of Bhairab, a devastating train collision has claimed the lives of at least 17 individuals and left over 100 others injured, with authorities expressing concerns about a potential rise in the death toll.

The tragic incident unfolded when a cargo train collided with a passenger train traveling in the opposite direction, leading to the derailment of two passenger carriages.

Sadiqur Rahman, a government administrator in Bhairab, has confirmed the grim aftermath, reporting that 17 bodies have been recovered, and more than 100 people have suffered injuries.

There is apprehension that the death toll might escalate further as rescue teams continue their efforts to extract bodies from beneath the overturned train cars.

To aid in the recovery operations, a rescue train equipped with cranes is en route to the accident site. Local residents and volunteers, many of them in tears, hurried to the scene to search for their loved ones and offer assistance.

Rahman explained that the collision occurred due to one train entering the same track as the other. Video footage from private Channel 24 depicted a large crowd at the site, with some individuals visibly distressed as they sought information about their relatives.

Nazmul Haque, a volunteer from the Red Crescent, reported that they had successfully rescued at least two people from the overturned carriages. Multiple response teams, including the fire service, police, and the elite Rapid Action Battalion security force, are actively engaged in the emergency response efforts.
