President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that the individual responsible for the 2021 Kabul airport bombing, which killed 13 US service members, has been arrested with Pakistan’s assistance and is now on his way to the US to face justice.
During his address to Congress, Trump shared the news but provided no further details. US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, will be taken into US custody by the Justice Department, FBI, and CIA.
“This brings us one step closer to justice for the 13 American heroes lost at Abbey Gate,” Bondi wrote on X, adding that the US would continue to pursue swift justice for those who harm Americans.
According to a CNN report, Mohammad Sharifullah, allegedly involved in planning the bombing, is being extradited to the US. The bombing occurred on August 26, 2021, during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, as troops worked to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies following the Taliban’s takeover. The attack, which intensified the sense of failure after 20 years of war, remains a painful chapter in US history.
