U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he intends to send Patriot air defense missile systems to Ukraine, emphasizing their necessity in helping the country defend itself. He criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “He speaks politely but bombs everyone in the evening.”
Trump did not specify how many Patriot systems would be provided but noted that the European Union would reimburse the U.S. for the cost.
The president’s remarks reflect his growing frustration with Putin, who has reportedly resisted Trump’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
According to a report by Axios, citing two sources familiar with the matter, Trump is expected to unveil a new plan that includes supplying Ukraine with offensive weapons — a notable shift from his previous position.
The White House has not responded to a request for comment by Reuters, and the report has not been independently verified.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been urging allies to provide more advanced air defense systems in response to relentless missile and drone attacks by Russian forces.
“We will send them the Patriots — they urgently need them,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews. “Putin really surprised many. He talks nicely and then launches attacks in the evening. I don’t like that.”
Trump added that Ukraine would receive various advanced military systems and emphasized that the cost would be fully covered by Ukraine’s allies. “They are going to pay us 100% for it — and that’s how we want it,” he said.
The president is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later this week to discuss Ukraine and other strategic matters.
