WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that Iran allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz this week as a “present” to the United States, describing it as a sign of seriousness from Tehran.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, Trump said the move demonstrated that Iran was “real and solid,” adding that the gesture followed earlier remarks in which he hinted at an unspecified oil-related concession. His comments came despite Iran’s denial of any direct negotiations with Washington.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that indirect diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with multiple regional actors attempting to mediate. He revealed that a 15-point peace framework had been shared with Iran through Pakistan, which is playing a посредiation role.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that Tehran rejected a U.S. ceasefire proposal and instead submitted its own conditions, including demands for sovereignty over the vital shipping route.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical concern, as nearly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil passes through it daily. Trump acknowledged that even limited disruption poses serious risks but expressed optimism that the situation would stabilize soon.
