Trump Dismisses Talk of Third Term, Denies Plans to Run Beyond 2028

In a wide-ranging interview, former President Donald Trump denied he has any intention of seeking a third term, stressing that he plans to stick to the two-term limit set by the U.S. Constitution.

“I’ll be an eight-year president, a two-term president. I’ve always thought that was very important,” Trump told Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press in an interview aired Sunday.

The 78-year-old, who has previously hinted—sometimes jokingly—about running for a third or even fourth term, clarified that those comments were meant to provoke the media. Nonetheless, Trump’s own company has been selling “Trump 2028” hats, sparking rumors about his future political ambitions.

Speaking from his Florida residence, Trump acknowledged that many supporters have urged him to stay in office past 2029. “So many people want me to do it,” he said, but emphasized, “to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do it.”

While the 22nd Amendment clearly states that no one can be elected president more than twice, some Trump supporters have floated untested legal theories suggesting loopholes. When asked about these claims, Trump downplayed them, saying, “Many people have said different things.”

Trump named several Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as potential successors.
