The United States has struck Kharg Island, Iran’s principal oil export terminal, in a dramatic overnight military operation, raising the spectre of a civilisational confrontation in the Persian Gulf. President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued his most chilling warning yet, declaring that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” unless Tehran agrees to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accepts a deal on American terms. He set a hard deadline of 8 p.m. ET Tuesday.
Iran has kept the Strait largely blockaded since the U.S.-Israeli military campaign began in late February, triggering a historic oil supply shock that has sent global energy prices into turmoil. For Pakistan, dependent on imported energy and already under fiscal duress, the consequences of a prolonged closure are severe.
Washington and regional mediators had been exploring a 45-day ceasefire. Trump has rejected it. Iran has rejected it. The only ceasefire on the table, in Trump’s own words, is one he dictates himself.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking from Budapest, confirmed the Kharg strikes align with Trump’s strategy. JPMorgan analysts, however, cautioned that Iran shows no signs of capitulation and that the Revolutionary Guard has actually grown stronger through the conflict.
