Tensions between Turkey and Israel escalated after Ankara strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him the “Hitler of our times” in response to his remarks on social media.
The dispute follows Turkiye’s move to file charges against Israeli political and military leaders over the interception of the “Sumud” Gaza flotilla in October 2025. Turkish prosecutors are seeking severe prison sentences, including life terms and additional penalties extending into thousands of years, according to local reports.
Ankara also referenced an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2024 against Netanyahu over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Turkish Foreign Ministry accused the Israeli leader of attempting to derail peace efforts and pursue expansionist policies, warning he could eventually face trial.
The exchange intensified after Israeli officials criticized Turkiye’s legal action. Netanyahu accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of supporting hostile groups, while Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz dismissed the case as politically motivated.
The indictment relates to an Israeli naval operation targeting a humanitarian flotilla headed to Gaza. Turkish authorities say activists were intercepted in international waters, detained, and transported to Israel, prompting a legal investigation under international maritime law.
