Print Friendly, PDF & Email

On Friday, Alejandro Mayorkas, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, announced the creation of a task force to explore the possibilities of utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in various aspects of national security. This would range from safeguarding critical infrastructure to inspecting cargo for identifying products made with forced labor.

While AI has been in use for quite some time, the widespread recognition of the capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has sparked global interest in exploring AI’s potential for both positive and negative purposes.

Mayorkas affirmed that AI would fundamentally transform the landscape of threats and said, “Our department will be at the forefront of responsibly utilizing AI to defend the homeland and prevent malicious use of this groundbreaking technology.”

The Artificial Intelligence Task Force would delve into ways of leveraging AI to better detect illicit goods like fentanyl or goods manufactured using forced labor while screening cargo.

Furthermore, Mayorkas highlighted the significance of using AI to enhance security measures of power grids and water supply systems, which have been deemed potential targets for adversaries.
