KYIV/CAIRO, March 28 — Ukraine has stepped up its diplomatic and defence outreach in the Gulf, agreeing to deepen security cooperation with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates during President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s regional visit.
According to officials, Kyiv and Doha signed a long-term defence cooperation agreement focused on sharing expertise in countering missile threats and unmanned aerial systems. Zelenskiy described the deal as part of a broader 10-year strategic partnership, noting that similar agreements have already been signed with Saudi Arabia and are expected soon with the UAE.
During his visit to Abu Dhabi, Zelenskiy met President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where both sides agreed to enhance collaboration in defence and security sectors.
Ukraine is offering its battlefield experience, particularly in drone warfare and air defence, to Gulf nations increasingly concerned about regional instability. Over 200 Ukrainian experts have already been deployed to advise Middle Eastern countries on countering drone attacks targeting critical infrastructure.
Zelenskiy aims to secure financial backing and strategic partnerships as Ukraine’s war with Russia continues into its fifth year. Talks also covered joint weapons production and energy cooperation, including a year-long diesel supply arrangement vital for Ukraine’s military and agriculture.
