A high-ranking Russian general, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, was killed in Moscow on Tuesday by a bomb planted in an electric scooter. Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, was targeted in an attack that also killed his assistant. Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service has confirmed responsibility for the assassination.

The attack occurred outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, where Kirillov and his aide were leaving the building. Video footage from the scene showed a large explosion following their exit. The SBU confirmed the operation, calling it the “liquidation” of a key figure in Russia’s military leadership.

Kirillov, 54, was a senior officer who had been accused by Ukraine of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops, a charge that Russia denies. His assassination marks one of the highest-profile killings of a Russian military official inside Russia during the ongoing war. Moscow is expected to take retaliatory actions following his death, with Russian officials, including former President Dmitry Medvedev, vowing revenge.

This killing is part of a broader pattern of targeted assassinations carried out by Ukraine, which justifies these actions as part of its efforts to weaken Russia’s military leadership. Kirillov had been accused by Ukraine of using chemical agents like chloropicrin on the battlefield to incapacitate Ukrainian soldiers.
