Trump, Xi Discuss Trade, TikTok, and Global Security

[post-views]

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged US President Donald Trump to avoid “unilateral trade-restrictive measures” during a phone call on Friday, warning against moves that could undermine progress from prior negotiations, Chinese state media reported. Xi described the exchange as “positive and constructive,” while Trump hailed “very productive” discussions covering trade, fentanyl, the Russia-Ukraine war, and TikTok.

Both leaders said they made progress but stopped short of announcing a final TikTok deal. Trump noted plans for TikTok’s US business to be taken over by American investors and suggested Oracle and major funds could be part of a controlling consortium. Xi, however, emphasized that any resolution should follow “market rules” and respect Chinese law.

The call marked the second conversation between the two since Trump’s return to the White House. Both sides agreed to meet at the APEC summit in South Korea next month, with reciprocal visits planned in 2025. Despite ongoing friction, the talks were described as “frank and in-depth,” coming against the backdrop of tariff disputes and heightened geopolitical competition.
