The ambush took place in an area outside Syrian government control. US officials withheld the names of the deceased for 24 hours until their next of kin were informed.

Initial assessments suggest the Islamic State was behind the attack. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the attacker was linked to Syrian security forces. Syrian state media confirmed two of their personnel were also injured.
