The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives has unanimously passed a resolution aimed at promoting democracy, transparency, and human rights in Pakistan. The resolution was presented on September 30, 2023, and received 50 votes in favor and none against. It has now been sent to the House of Representatives for further consideration and approval.

The resolution highlights several key demands regarding Pakistan’s electoral process. It emphasizes the need for transparent elections, the upholding of human rights, and adherence to the rule of law. Additionally, it calls for an investigation into allegations of interference and irregularities during the February 8 elections.

The committee’s decision comes after a recent hearing held on March 20, which focused on democracy in Pakistan post-elections. During the hearing, American Ambassador Donald Lu provided insights and perspectives on the situation. He categorically denied allegations suggesting that the United States played any role in the removal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from the office of prime minister. He emphasized that the allegations of US involvement in Imran Khan’s removal were baseless and asserted respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, the resolution urges US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage in increased dialogue and cooperation with Pakistani authorities to address these concerns and support democratic principles in the region. The resolution also called for transparent elections in Pakistan, which are in accordance with the aspirations of the people.
