The United States has praised Pakistan’s crucial role in the arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, a key figure involved in the 2021 Kabul airport bombing, highlighting the continued importance of US-Pakistan cooperation on counterterrorism efforts.
During a press briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce expressed gratitude towards Pakistan for its assistance in bringing Sharifullah to justice. She emphasized that both countries share a common interest in fighting terrorism, underscoring the significance of their partnership in combating global threats.
This acknowledgment follows US President Donald Trump’s comments in a joint session of Congress, where he confirmed Sharifullah’s arrest. Trump revealed, “I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity.” The bombing, which occurred on August 26, 2021, during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, resulted in the deaths of 13 US service members and furthered America’s sense of defeat after two decades of war. Sharifullah, a high-ranking member of Daesh, was captured near the Pakistan-Afghan border in a successful operation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to counterterrorism, emphasizing the nation’s efforts to prevent militants from using safe havens for attacks against other nations. Sharifullah is now facing legal proceedings in the US, having appeared in court in Virginia, where he was appointed a public defender and given an interpreter. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 10, where he will remain in custody until then.
