Pakistan and the United States are expected to explore breakthroughs in agriculture and information technology during their first ministerial-level meeting in seven years, according to Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar.

The meeting, to be held under the US-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), will involve Qamar, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, and other senior US officials.

The Pakistani embassy reports that bilateral trade in goods and services between the two countries amounts to $12 billion, a figure that could be increased with strengthened ties. “It is important that we start talking,” said Qamar, adding that he expects breakthroughs on both sides during the meeting. Tai’s office has yet to comment on the upcoming discussions.
