In a major win for the Joe Biden administration, the United States (US) Supreme Court delivered a decisive verdict on Friday, affirming the federal government’s authority to determine which undocumented migrants should be targeted for deportation.
With an overwhelming 8-1 majority, the highest court in the land declared that the states of Texas and Louisiana lacked the legal standing to challenge the federal government’s well-established policy.
The legal dispute arose after the Department of Homeland Security, in September 2021, issued a directive to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, instructing them to concentrate their expulsion efforts on individuals who “pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security.”
Presenting a strong defense of President Joe Biden’s administration’s policy, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued in court that the federal government must prioritize its limited resources, given the daunting task of dealing with the presence of approximately 11 million undocumented “noncitizens” within the country.
This resounding Supreme Court verdict solidifies the Biden administration’s commitment to addressing immigration challenges while strategically focusing on individuals who potentially endanger national security, public safety, and the integrity of the nation’s borders.
