The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the case of figure skater Kamila Valieva. This comes after a Russian investigation found the teenager not guilty of any doping infraction.

WADA is seeking a four-year ban and disqualification of all of Valieva’s results from the date of the sample collection. Valieva tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine at the Russian national championships in December 2021, but the result was only revealed on Feb. 8, 2022, a day after she helped her team win a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.

In response, Valieva claimed the positive test was the result of a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication. WADA disagrees with the disciplinary tribunal of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) that the athlete bore “no fault or negligence” and has exercised its right to lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
