Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not preparing for peace but instead readying troops for fresh offensive operations, even as he prepares to meet US President Donald Trump for high-profile peace talks in Alaska.

Speaking in a video message late Monday, Zelenskyy cited Ukrainian intelligence reports indicating that Moscow is redeploying forces, particularly in the Zaporizhia region, signalling preparations for renewed assaults. He accused Putin of seeking to use Friday’s meeting with Trump as a public relations victory while continuing the war unchanged.

The warning comes amid Trump’s controversial suggestion that Ukraine may need to cede territory to end the war — an idea Kyiv has firmly rejected. Zelenskyy said concessions would only embolden Russia, stressing that “concessions do not persuade a killer.” European Union leaders, excluding Hungary, reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting that borders cannot be altered by force.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed these sentiments, asserting that any peace deal must include Ukraine’s full participation. Analysts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War warned that Moscow shows no sign of preparing its public for anything less than a full military victory.

Zelenskyy’s remarks underline the heightened stakes ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting, with both Ukraine’s future and Europe’s security interests on the line.
