27th Amendment Sparks Fierce Parliamentary Debate

[post-views]

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has denounced the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment as an “attack on the House,” pledging that his party will resist it through democratic means. Speaking in the National Assembly, he cautioned that constitutional changes must come through national consensus, not political expediency. Gohar recalled that when the 18th Amendment was passed, it reflected unity and strengthened the federation, but today’s proposal risks deepening divisions.

The amendment reportedly includes plans for a constitutional court, revival of executive magistrates, and changes to the NFC Award and Article 243 — matters touching the core of federal balance. Gohar warned that such measures could burden the judiciary and weaken parliamentary integrity, urging lawmakers to prioritise national stability amid economic distress and internal security challenges.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry rejected claims of rolling back provincial autonomy, clarifying that the aim is better governance, not centralisation. He maintained that the amendment seeks structural efficiency and reaffirmed that all political forces will be consulted before any constitutional change.
