The United States and Israel have withdrawn their negotiators from the ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar, citing a lack of progress with Hamas. US special envoy Steve Witkoff blamed Hamas for failing to reach an agreement and announced that Washington would “consider alternative options” to secure the release of Israeli hostages and improve stability in Gaza.

Negotiations in Qatar, mediated by the EU, Britain, and Germany, have stalled after weeks of indirect talks between Israeli and Hamas officials. Hamas recently submitted amendments to the proposed ceasefire, seeking guarantees for aid delivery, Israeli troop withdrawal, and a permanent end to hostilities. Israel, however, recalled its negotiators for consultations, accusing Hamas of blocking a potential deal and warning against any agreement that could jeopardize Israeli security.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, with the World Health Organization describing the widespread hunger as “man-made.” Aid agencies report severe restrictions on humanitarian access due to ongoing conflict and Israeli blockades. France has openly blamed Israel for the crisis, while Israel accuses Hamas of hindering aid distribution.

Throughout 21 months of conflict, both Israel and Hamas have maintained uncompromising positions. Israel insists on dismantling Hamas, while Hamas demands a full Israeli withdrawal and guaranteed aid. The war, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack, has resulted in nearly 60,000 Palestinian deaths and left millions in dire conditions.
