PPP Reviews 27th Amendment Proposal

[post-views]

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s delegation met him and President Asif Ali Zardari to seek PPP’s backing for the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment. In a post on X, Bilawal confirmed that the proposal included the establishment of a constitutional court, the restoration of executive magistrates, and the transfer of judges’ administrative powers.

The amendment also reportedly seeks to revise the constitutional protection of the provinces’ share under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and introduce changes to Article 243, which governs the command of the armed forces. Bilawal stated that the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet on November 6, after President Zardari’s return from Doha, to finalise the party’s position.

The proposed 27th Amendment follows last year’s 26th Amendment, which created constitutional benches in the superior judiciary. Critics argue that the new amendment aims to centralise authority within the executive and curb judicial autonomy.

Opposition parties, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have strongly rejected the move, warning that it would undermine judicial independence and distort the constitutional balance of power between the federation and the provinces.
