Zelensky Pushes Ukraine Sovereignty in Peace Talks

[post-views]

President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated that Ukraine’s top priorities in ongoing peace negotiations with Russia are safeguarding sovereignty and securing robust security guarantees. Speaking after meetings in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and joining a call with European leaders from the UK, Germany, Poland, and Italy, Zelensky stressed that territorial concessions in eastern Donbas are off the table.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian and US negotiators concluded two days of discussions in Florida aimed at revising a US-drafted peace plan, which Kyiv viewed as favoring Moscow. While the White House expressed optimism, Zelensky remained cautious, describing the talks as “constructive” but noting persistent “tough issues” to resolve. US special envoy Steve Witkoff is now en route to Moscow to present outcomes to President Vladimir Putin, accompanied by Jared Kushner.

Macron emphasized that no finalized peace plan exists and stressed that territorial issues, security guarantees, and management of frozen Russian assets must involve Ukraine and European nations. He praised US diplomatic efforts but noted Russia’s repeated refusal to halt hostilities.

The diplomatic push coincides with renewed conflict on the ground. On Monday, a Russian missile strike on Dnipro killed four and injured 40, underscoring the urgent need for a ceasefire. Zelensky stressed that ending the war remains Russia’s responsibility.

Kyiv also faces internal challenges, with Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak resigning amid a corruption probe, though he is not accused of wrongdoing. Despite these hurdles, Ukraine continues to seek a dignified resolution while protecting its territorial integrity.
