The Supreme Court on Tuesday designated PTI lawyer Salman Safdar as amicus curiae to inspect Imran Khan’s living conditions at Adiala jail, following concerns about the former prime minister’s wellbeing.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan granted Safdar immediate access after rejecting senior PTI leader Latif Khosa’s request for an urgent meeting the previous day. The court directed Safdar to submit a written report by Wednesday.
After a three-hour visit, Safdar told reporters that Imran appeared healthy and fine, though he declined further details pending his court submission. The chief justice assured Safdar wouldn’t face delays at the jail, offering personal staff assistance if needed.
Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan informed the court that a report on Imran’s conditions was previously submitted in August 2023 when he was detained in Attock jail. However, CJP Afridi noted no satisfactory follow-up report existed since then.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja called his recent meeting with the chief justice “beneficial,” stating progress had been made regarding Imran’s incarceration and health concerns.
Imran has been imprisoned since August 2023, with PTI alleging violations of his prisoner rights, including a recent undisclosed medical procedure performed without informing relatives.
