COLOMBO — Persistent rain washed out the Super Eight match between New Zealand and Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday, preventing a single ball from being bowled.
Pakistan captain Salman Agha won the toss and chose to bat in the Group Two encounter. However, steady rain before the start of play grew heavier, leaving large puddles on the covers and across parts of the outfield. With conditions showing no sign of improvement, officials were forced to abandon the match.
As a result, both teams shared one point each from what was supposed to be the opening fixture of the tournament’s Super Eight stage — a frustrating outcome for players and fans alike.
Pakistan will now turn their attention to a high-profile clash against former champions England on Tuesday. Meanwhile, New Zealand are set to take on tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka on Wednesday as the race for semifinal spots continues.
