MQM-P Terms Sindh Assembly Resolution on Karachi “Unconstitutional”

[post-views]

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) strongly criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh government for passing a resolution against the creation of any new province, calling it unconstitutional and politically motivated.

On Saturday, the Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution declaring Karachi an inseparable part of Sindh and rejecting any proposal to alter its status. The move came after MQM-P had demanded greater federal intervention in Karachi, including proposing it be declared a federal territory.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, accompanied by senior party leaders, argued that no provincial assembly has the authority to pass a resolution that contradicts Pakistan’s Constitution. He said Article 239 of the 1973 Constitution clearly outlines the procedure for creating new provinces, and any attempt to block constitutional debate amounts to challenging the federation itself.

Siddiqui warned that such actions deepen divisions instead of resolving grievances. He emphasized that MQM-P’s demands have always remained within constitutional limits and called for dialogue rather than political confrontation.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government defended the resolution as a step to safeguard the province’s unity and territorial integrity, urging all stakeholders to avoid divisive rhetoric and protect national cohesion.
