Pakistan Confirms Role in US-Iran Backchannel Talks, Urges Peace Efforts

[post-views]

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Thursday that the United States and Iran are engaged in indirect talks through Pakistan, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

His statement comes amid heightened tensions following recent strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian targets, which triggered retaliatory actions and raised fears of a wider conflict. Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a mediator, with reports suggesting it has been relaying messages between Washington and Tehran. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that a 15-point peace framework has been shared with Iran via Pakistan.

Dar dismissed speculation about formal talks being held in Islamabad, calling such reports unnecessary, and clarified that communication is taking place through diplomatic channels. He added that countries like Türkiye and Egypt are also supporting peace efforts.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stressed that diplomacy requires patience and confidentiality, noting that “diplomacy is a process, not an event.” He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing outreach efforts.

Pakistan also remains in close coordination with Saudi Arabia, described as a key interlocutor, as broader regional efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
