Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a wide-ranging reform plan aimed at improving Pakistan’s tax dispute system and speeding up pending cases. The decision came after a presentation by a special government task force formed earlier this year to restructure the country’s tax litigation framework.
The proposed reforms include setting up case scrutiny committees, creating a Centralised Litigation Management System (CLMS), and linking the performance of tax officials, including commissioners, to the outcomes of tax cases.
During a meeting on reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue, the prime minister praised the task force for its efforts and said ongoing digitisation in the tax system was already showing positive results. He directed authorities to implement the reforms within a clear timeframe and improve the alternative dispute resolution system to reduce pressure on courts.
Officials said the digital CLMS would help organise and monitor tax cases more effectively. They added that the ADR mechanism had already helped recover Rs2.4 billion for the national treasury during the current year.
