The Punjab government on Tuesday presented a Rs5.903 trillion budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, marking a 10.7 percent increase over the previous year. Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman tabled the budget in the Punjab Assembly after receiving approval from the provincial cabinet.
The budget, the third under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s administration, prioritises public welfare, infrastructure development, education, and healthcare while maintaining fiscal discipline through austerity measures.
Addressing the assembly, the finance minister announced that Rs752 billion has been allocated for development projects, reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustaining economic growth across the province. Punjab is expected to receive Rs4.39 trillion under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, an increase of 8.1 percent compared to the previous fiscal year.
The education sector has been allocated Rs750 billion, including funding for the Chief Minister’s Laptop Programme, Honhaar Scholarships, and a Rs15 billion School Meal Programme. The health sector will receive Rs500.62 billion, with Rs20 billion earmarked for the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and funding for Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics.
The government also announced a 7 percent increase in salaries for public employees and a 3.5 percent rise in pensions. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said public welfare and development would remain top priorities despite financial challenges and reduced fiscal space.
