Pakistan Peoples Party leader Amjad Hussain Advocate was elected unopposed as Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, consolidating the party’s position following its decisive victory in the recent regional elections. The election took place during a formal session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly in Gilgit, where Amjad Hussain secured the office of leader of the house without any opposition candidate coming forward.
Addressing the assembly after his election, the newly elected chief minister pledged that the welfare and development of Gilgit-Baltistan would remain his government’s foremost priority. He described the region as resource-rich and committed to harnessing its natural wealth for human development and economic progress. Tackling unemployment and creating opportunities for the youth featured prominently among his stated priorities.
Amjad Hussain thanked PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for nominating him and expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s acknowledgement of the party’s electoral mandate in the region, calling the gesture a reflection of democratic continuity.
Earlier in the day, PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and was administered the oath by outgoing Speaker Nazir Ahmed. In a gesture of coalition accommodation, PML-N’s Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker and sworn in by the newly installed Speaker.
The assembly session, chaired by outgoing Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate, also witnessed the oath-taking of newly elected assembly members. Nazir Ahmed congratulated the incoming members and expressed hope that the new assembly would dedicate itself to the region’s development and prosperity.
