The US Senate voted 50-47 late Wednesday to block an Iran war powers resolution, reversing course hours after President Trump erupted in a fierce shouting match with Republican senators during a closed-door Capitol Hill lunch.
The resolution would have directed Trump to withdraw American forces from hostilities with Iran without congressional authorisation. White House pressure swiftly changed the calculus. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who had previously supported executive checks, voted against the measure after an afternoon White House briefing, while Senator Rand Paul voted present.
Trump reportedly vented a long list of grievances at lawmakers, engaging in a direct shouting match with Cassidy, who demanded clarity on a recently signed US-Iran memorandum that offers Tehran financial incentives but falls short of original war objectives.
Separately, the administration requested $70 billion to cover war expenses, requiring Democratic support to clear the Senate’s 60-vote threshold.
