TEHRAN: Iran has warned that it will no longer consider itself bound by its agreement with the United States aimed at ending the Middle East conflict if Washington continues to breach the commitments outlined in the accord, Iranian state television reported on Saturday.
The warning relates to the understanding reached through Pakistani mediation. Speaking at the United Nations in New York on Friday, Iran’s Permanent Representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that Tehran would reassess its obligations if the United States failed to honour the terms of the Islamabad Understanding.
According to a statement broadcast by Iran’s state-run television network, Iravani said that if the United States persisted in violating its commitments, Iran would no longer regard itself as obligated to implement its own responsibilities under the agreement.
The Iran-US understanding followed a ceasefire reached in April. However, tensions have intensified in recent days as both countries exchanged heavy military fire around the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns that the diplomatic process designed to secure a lasting settlement could be undermined.
Despite the renewed hostilities, US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire had effectively ended while maintaining that negotiations with Iran would continue in an effort to achieve a permanent resolution.
Addressing reporters on Friday, Iravani accused Washington of breaching the agreement by launching and sustaining what he described as large-scale military attacks against Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He reaffirmed that Iran remains committed to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding, provided that the United States fully complies with its own obligations under the agreement.
