ISLAMABAD: In a contempt case, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Imran Khan, Asad Umar, and Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday.
The warrants were issued by a four-member ECP bench led by member Nisar Durrani who was hearing the case. The ECP issued a contempt notice to PTI officials in August last year for disparaging the commission and its head during numerous public meetings, press conferences, and interviews.
They were accused with insulting and making unparliamentary, intemperate, and disrespectful statements against the electoral body on many occasions, according to the notification.
While rejecting the PTI leaders’ requests for exemption, the bench ordered them today to appear before it at the next hearing, which is set for January 17. The commission had reserved the verdict on their pleas on January 3.
