The State Department announced on Tuesday that while the United States desires stability in South Asia, its connections with Pakistan and India are separate entities.
Spokesperson Ned Price made this statement during a press conference on Monday while discussing the tensions between Pakistan and India and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation to Indian leader Narendra Modi to discuss pressing matters, including the Indian Illegal Occupation of Jammu Kashmir.
On January 17th, in an attempt to resolve conflicts with New Delhi, including the issue of Kashmir, PM Shehbaz requested Modi to engage in candid and earnest talks. “We have long advocated for stability in South Asia, and that is certainly what we wish to see. We aim to promote it. As for our partnership with India and Pakistan, these are relationships that exist independently. We do not view these relationships as mutually exclusive,” said Price.
The spokesperson also noted that the pace, scope, and nature of any discourse between India and Pakistan are matters for the two countries to decide.
