SANLIURFA, Turkey: As the scorching sun beats down, a Syrian refugee takes down laundry from the clothesline and whispers a prayer for the upcoming Turkish election, hoping for a victory for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who faces a tough re-election battle on May 14.
Neroz Hussein, a mother from the Kurdish-majority Kobane in Syria’s northwest, is unambiguous about her support for the Turkish leader. “Recep Tayyip Erdogan will protect us,” she says.

Ever since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, Turkey has welcomed more than 3.7 million people, with estimates indicating that the number is closer to five million, who fled the brutal regime of President Bashar al-Assad, Russian airstrikes, and attacks by the Islamic State group.
Despite having a temporary protection status, which leaves them vulnerable to forced return, most refugees are hopeful that Erdogan’s government will continue to support them and ensure their safety.
