The Sindh Forest Department has unveiled its latest initiative, the Sindh Sustainable Forest Management Policy (Amended) 2023, in an effort to tackle the longstanding issue of ineffective tree plantation policies. This time, they have taken a bold step to go green, eliminating clauses that previously encouraged “agricultural activity” on forestland in the riverine area. The primary objective of this scheme is to combat the destructive practice of cultivation, which has resulted in significant deforestation and contributed to the ongoing climate crises.
Recently, alarming satellite images have revealed a staggering 80 percent depletion of Sindh’s riverine forests, particularly in areas like Matiari, Surjani, and Sadhuja Reserved Forest. This depletion paints a grim picture of the environmental devastation that has unfolded. Interestingly, it is noteworthy that the announcement of the new policy coincided with reports of the timber mafia wreaking havoc by illegally felling trees across Pakistan.
