Rigging & Higher Turnouts of Voters in Pakistan !

[post-views]

Casting a vote is vital to democracy in Pakistan because it is a way of expressing one’s opinion and preference for the political system and the leaders who will govern the country. Voting also ensures that the government is accountable to the people and reflects their will and aspirations. According to a public opinion report on democracy in Pakistan, nearly 3 in 5 Pakistanis (59%) opined that democracy is better than all other political systems.

Higher turnout can curtail rigging in Pakistan by making it more difficult for any party or group to manipulate the results or influence the voters. A higher turnout also indicates a higher level of political awareness and participation among the citizens, which can strengthen the democratic culture and institutions in the country. According to the same report, public trust in election commissions and fair elections has improved over the years. However, since 2022, it has declined to a new ebb. In the 2018 elections, Pakistan witnessed a record turnout of 55.8%, which was the highest since 1970.

Accordingly, it is critical to create awareness regarding the right to vote. Some possible strategies to create awareness about the importance of casting a vote in Pakistan are:
1.
Conducting voter education and awareness workshops in universities, colleges, schools, and communities to inform the people about the electoral process, their rights and responsibilities, the candidates and their manifestos, and the issues that affect their lives.
2.
Creating a common platform for civil society organizations, media, academia, government, and NGO representatives to collaborate and coordinate their efforts for voter awareness and mobilization.
3.
Using various media channels such as radio, television, newspapers, social media, posters, banners, flyers, etc. to disseminate information and messages about voting and democracy.
4.
Organizing public events such as rallies, marches, debates, dialogues, street plays, etc. to engage the people in discussions and interactions about voting and democracy.
5.
Providing special support and encouragement to marginalized groups such as women, minorities, ethnic communities, and the poor to participate in the electoral process and exercise their right to vote.
6.
Acting as a watchdog of electoral practices and reporting any cases of electoral manipulation, corruption, or violence to the relevant authorities.

Lastly, it will be the power and contribution of the people to ensure free & fair elections in Pakistan.
