The federal government in Pakistan has informed the Supreme Court that military trials of civilians involved in the unrest that unfolded on May 9, following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in a corruption case, have commenced.

This update was conveyed to the court through a miscellaneous application, complying with the court’s directives issued on August 3. The application emphasized that approximately 102 individuals were taken into custody due to their roles in attacks on military installations and establishments.

This development comes on the eve of a scheduled hearing before a five-member apex court bench, headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and including Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, and Justice Ayesha Malik. The hearing is set to address challenges to the trial of civilians in military courts.
