CJP Qazi Faez Isa to Lead Bench in Revisiting Accountability Law Amendments

[post-views]

A larger bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa is scheduled to consider the federal government’s intra-court appeal challenging the top court’s decision to nullify amendments to the accountability law on October 31 (Tuesday).

Previously, a three-member larger bench of the Supreme Court, headed by former Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial and including Justices Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, had, on September 15, voted 2-1 to reinstate corruption cases against public office-holders. They struck down certain amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999, which had been introduced by the PDM government, deeming them contrary to the public interest rights outlined in the Constitution.

Consequently, the federal government lodged an appeal under Section 5 of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023 against the Supreme Court’s decision.

The government’s appeal will be heard by a five-member larger bench presided over by CJP Qazi Faez Isa, and including Justices Amin-Ud-Din Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Athar Minullah, and Hasan Azhar Rizvi.
