ISLAMABAD: Following the announcement of the 2024 general election schedule, Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has hit the ground running. Training for crucial election officials, Returning Officers (ROs) and District Returning Officers (DROs), has resumed across the country.
Over 850 ROs and 144 DROs are currently undergoing intensive training sessions led by senior ECP officials. These sessions, intended to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct fair and transparent elections, are expected to conclude by December 19th.
Authorities are taking several measures to ensure smooth election execution. In Islamabad, the District Commissioner, acting as a DRO, has sent a directive to the Federal Directorate of Education, temporarily restricting staff leave. Similar restrictions are being implemented across the country, with exceptions for medical and maternity leave.
The resumption of training comes after a brief pause due to a legal challenge. The Lahore High Court, acting on a petition from PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf), initially stalled the training by questioning the selection process for ROs and DROs. However, the Supreme Court intervened, overturning the High Court’s order and clearing the path for training to resume.
This back-and-forth highlights the complex environment surrounding the upcoming elections. Ensuring free and fair polls while navigating legal challenges remains a key priority for ECP. With training back on track and election preparations underway, Pakistan is inching closer towards its 2024 electoral date.
