Prominent Pakistani Politicians and Cleric Fazlur Rehman Embarks on Historic Mission to Afghanistan

[post-views]

Following an invitation from the Afghan interim government, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the JUI-F party, made a groundbreaking trip to Kabul on Sunday. This marks his first visit since the Taliban takeover in 2021 and signifies a potential turning point in Pak-Afghan relations.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Rehman engaged in crucial talks with Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Kabir and other officials. Discussions focused on regional and security matters, particularly the pressing issue of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghan soil.

Highlighting the significance of the visit, Tolo News shared Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s hope that it will “positively impact relations between the two nations.”

Rehman’s agenda extends beyond TTP concerns. He plans to meet with Taliban supreme leader Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada, an unprecedented move due to Akhundzada’s limited interaction with foreign delegates. This meeting further underscores the JUI-F leader’s potential influence and ability to bridge the gap between both sides.

Speaking before his departure, Rehman noted his intention to utilize his established connections with the Taliban to benefit both countries. He aims to act as a conduit, conveying the official Pakistani stance and observations from his meetings to the Afghan leadership.

Rehman’s visit offers a glimmer of hope amidst strained Pak-Afghan relations. His diplomatic efforts and unique position as a respected religious figure hold the potential to pave the way for improved security, regional cooperation, and ultimately, stronger ties between the two nations.
