Following the February 8th general elections, Pakistan’s political landscape is in flux with no party securing a clear majority. To navigate this uncertainty, the PML-N, led by the Sharif brothers, has embarked on a series of meetings with other major parties to explore the possibility of forming a coalition government.
PML-N and PPP:
- Positive Discussions: On Sunday, the PML-N and the PPP held a meeting in Lahore, marking the “first official contact” between the two parties for government formation. Both sides agreed “in principle” on political cooperation and discussed proposals for achieving political stability.
- Healing Wounds and Consensus: PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the need to “heal the wounds of polarization” and develop a consensus on the future economic agenda. He highlighted the increased mandate given to the coalition compared to 2018, indicating a victory for “democratic forces” over “fascist slogans.”
PML-N and MQM-P:
- Principle Agreement: Earlier in the day, the PML-N hosted an MQM-P delegation led by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Both sides reached a “principle agreement” on working together in the national interest, though Siddiqui downplayed any talk of government formation.
- Stability First: Siddiqui emphasized the challenging situation created by the elections and stressed the importance of all parties contributing to national stability. He remained non-committal on MQM-P’s role in the future government.
Next Steps:
- Continued Consultations: The PML-N plans to continue consultations with other parties and has established a legal team to address allegations of rigging.
- Coalition Government Likely: Both the PML-N and MQM-P acknowledge the lack of a single party’s mandate, suggesting a coalition government is the most likely outcome.
- Uncertainties Remain: While positive discussions have taken place, details on power-sharing, leadership positions, and specific policy directions remain unclear.
This flurry of activity indicates the PML-N’s proactive approach to forming a government. Whether these meetings translate into a stable and effective coalition remains to be seen, but the coming days will likely reveal more about the shape of Pakistan’s next government.
