Pakistan Secures Eighth Term on UN Security Council with Overwhelming Support

Pakistan was elected to the UN Security Council on Thursday, achieving a historic eighth non-permanent seat with an impressive 182 out of 190 votes. These seats are allocated to regional groups to ensure geographical representation, with candidates needing to secure the support of over two-thirds of the General Assembly to win a seat.

This year, the regional groups, which play a crucial role in the election process, endorsed Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece for the upcoming term. Additionally, the newly elected members will join the five permanent members with veto power and the five countries elected last year — Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia. This diverse representation ensures a balanced approach to global issues and reflects the UN’s commitment to inclusivity.
